A PEMF mat is chosen by position first, then by coil count

The four mat sizes in this range are 40×60 cm, 60×100 cm, 40×120 cm and 60×200 cm, and they carry 2, 4, 4 and 8 magnetic coils respectively. Before comparing them, note that length alone tells you very little. Two mats can be the same length and behave quite differently because the coils inside are spaced differently, and the mat you actually use every day is the one that fits the surface you sit or lie on.

A practical way to choose is to work backwards from the body position you will use most often. If the mat lives on an office chair, seat depth matters and overall length is irrelevant. If it lies on a bed, the bed width and the position of the pillow decide whether you need 60 cm or 100 cm. If it covers a whole body on the floor, head-to-heel length decides, and the head position then brings a separate frequency rule into play.

What the four sizes cover

The table below uses the dimensions and coil counts printed in the product manual. The last column is the part most buyers skip: each size has one thing that has to be measured in the room before ordering, and it is rarely the mat itself.

Size Coils Usual position Suits Measure this first
40×60 cm 2 Office chair, sofa seat, single cushion Desk work, first-time users, travel Seat width and seat depth
60×100 cm 4 Single bed, treatment couch, floor area Back and hips on a bed Bed width and pillow position
40×120 cm 4 Recliner, narrow bench, floor strip Body length on a narrow surface Bench length and overhang
60×200 cm 8 Double bed, floor, studio table Full body with margin Floor space and storage

Why coil count matters more than length

A longer mat is not a stronger mat. The 40×120 cm and 60×100 cm versions both carry four coils, but they spread those four coils over very different areas. On the longer, narrower mat the coils sit further apart along the body, while on the shorter, wider mat they sit closer together across the back. That difference shows up in use: if your routine is a seated session over the lower back, a denser layout keeps more of the area you care about inside the coil zones, while a longer layout spends mat on areas you never cover.

The eight-coil 60×200 cm mats exist for a different reason. They are not there to make the field stronger; they are there to cover a full body without leaving long gaps between zones. If you intend to lie down head to heel, the eight-coil layout is the only one of the four that keeps the pattern continuous over that distance. If you intend to sit, the two-coil mat does the same job in a fraction of the floor space.

Matching a size to a daily routine

Buyers rarely regret buying the correct size; they regret buying a size that has no place in the room. The second table matches the four sizes to routines that actually repeat, rather than to abstract coverage numbers.

Routine Size that fits Why this one
Seated session at a desk 40×60 cm Fits a chair seat, short cable run, can be stored upright
Evening session on a bed 60×100 cm Covers back and hips while the pillow stays clear
Full-body session on the floor 60×200 cm Head-to-heel coverage without long gaps between zones

The 2 Hz rule that comes with a full-length mat

Long mats create a specific safety question that short mats do not: the head ends up on the mat. The manual is explicit here — when the device is applied to the head area, the frequency must not exceed 2 Hz. On a 60×200 cm mat that means one of two habits. Either you keep the head and neck off the mat and start the session from the shoulders down, or you accept the head position and hold the frequency at or below 2 Hz for the whole session.

Neither habit is difficult, but the choice should be made before the first session, not after. Write it on the card that stays with the mat. On shorter mats the question usually does not arise, because the head naturally rests on a pillow beyond the mat edge.

Control box, cable and carry bag

All four sizes run from the same control unit, so the operating method does not change when you change size. What changes is how much cable has to be managed. The control box should sit within arm’s reach, on a dry surface, with the connection cable running clear of the mat rather than under it. The mat itself should lie flat on a hard, heat-resistant surface.

The carry bag is listed at 55×65×7 cm and the manufacturer notes that it varies with mat size, so a 60×200 cm mat does not travel in the same bag as a 40×60 cm one. After use, the manual asks for the mat to be stored in the bag without tight or random folding, because the coils sit inside the pad. If the mat is going to be rolled or folded every day, that is worth confirming with the supplier in writing before you order the largest size.

What to confirm before ordering

  • The coil count for the exact size you are buying, in writing — not just the size.
  • The flat surface that will host the mat, measured with the furniture in its real position.
  • Whether the head will rest on the mat, and if so, whether the control unit makes the 2 Hz limit easy to set.
  • The bag dimensions for that size, and how tightly the mat may be folded for storage.
  • Cable length from the control box to the nearest outlet, so the box is not left on the floor.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bigger mat always better?

No. A larger mat gives more coverage but takes more floor or bed space and is harder to store. If the routine is seated, a 40×60 cm mat is the more usable choice.

Do 40×120 cm and 60×100 cm behave the same because both have four coils?

They share a coil count but not a layout. Four coils spread over 120 cm sit further apart than four coils packed into 100 cm, so the covered zones differ even though the count is identical.

Can a 40×60 cm mat be used on a bed?

It can, but it covers a smaller area. On a bed it is usually placed under the lower back or hips rather than used as a full-length mat.

What frequency should be used near the head?

The manual states that frequency should not exceed 2 Hz when the device is applied to the head area. Keep the head off the mat, or hold the setting at or below 2 Hz.

Does one control box work with every size?

Yes. All sizes in the range use the same control unit and operating method; only the pad and its coil count change.

How should the mat be stored between sessions?

Flat or loosely rolled in the carry bag. Avoid tight or random folding, and keep it away from damp rooms, direct sun and strong magnetic items.

Who should not use a PEMF mat?

People with cardiac pacemakers, implanted neurostimulators or other electronic implants must not use it. Pregnant women, children and anyone with a serious medical condition should consult a qualified professional before use.

Can the mat be used on a carpet?

A firm, flat surface is what the manual asks for. A thick carpet or a soft mattress top lets the pad sink and can trap heat, so a flat floor, a firm mat or a treatment couch is the better host surface.

Choosing a size with the Honkay team

Honkay has manufactured physiotherapy and aesthetic equipment since 2005, including PEMF mats, loops and dual-channel systems, and ships with a 24-month warranty from factory shipment. The mat in this article runs from 1 to 100 Hz with an intensity range of 0 to 25 Gs and is offered in four sizes with 2, 4 or 8 coils.

Send the Honkay team the surface you plan to use, the body position and whether the head will rest on the mat. A one-paragraph description is usually enough to narrow four sizes down to one, and it avoids the more common mistake of buying length that the room cannot hold.
